Paradox Tale of Logic Gate is a fictional territory. At this time, it has one citizen, Citizen 000 001. It has rules, routes, technologies and a Control Room. Citizen can move, but only within the directions made by the system.
Citizen is caught between different systems of power. One comes from Iranian political and revolutionary control. Another comes through Western geopolitical, military and economic power. These systems act differently and oppose one another, but their histories are also entangled. Citizen belongs fully to neither, but has to live with the consequences of both.
The language of logic gates runs through the territory: AND, OR, NOT, NOR, XOR, NAND. These terms offer clear conditions, but Citizen’s position is not so clear. Inside AND outside. Movement AND control. Privilege AND restriction. The systems can oppose one another AND be connected at the same time.
Inside the territory are a Prayer Mat, Uniform and Control Disks. The Uniform carries one form of control through histories of revolution, war and political power in Iran. The Control Disks bring in another through technology, access, concealment and the Western gaze. Citizen stands physically between them.
The Control Disk contains a real colour-changing printed-electronics display. The technology grew from Farvash’s material research with RISE. Farvash had access in Sweden to the scientific infrastructure needed to develop the technology. While it was being used to construct a fictional world about control, the same research began attracting military interest for its possible use in concealment.
Paradox Tale grew from experiences of self-censorship, migration and living under these different conditions of power. Leaving one place does not necessarily mean leaving its systems behind. Control can travel with the person, while new forms of control appear around them.
The Paradox Tale world continues through sculptures and performance episodes, among them Deep Sleep and Water War.
