Farvash
Mother, Father and OR
Misscheifs Linnegatan, Stockholm
2020

Mother, Father and OR is a performance in which Farvash’s parents take part in an attempt to upgrade their child to 2.0.
Farvash sits between their mother and father, inside a diagram mapped across the space. The diagram traces two lines: from mother to mother to child, and from father to father to daughter. A mirror hangs in front of Farvash, while their head and face are covered.
Farvash’s father writes a poem from his father’s poetry book onto Farvash’s back using thermochromic ink. The writing disappears with the heat of the body. Farvash’s mother then draws a large piece of ice across the same area, cooling the skin and revealing the poem again.
Behind the mother is a chehel-kelid (چهلکلید), a traditional forty-key bowl used in ritual washing, passed from Farvash’s grandmother, who was a midwife, to their mother and then to Farvash. Behind the father is the poetry book written by Farvash’s grandfather.
Throughout the performance, mother, father and child whisper and talk to one another as the writing appears and disappears. The performance ends when the actions stop and Farvash leaves.
The work explores inheritance, memory and intergenerational transmission.
